Learning to Read Your Roof

All roofs degrade to some extent over time. No matter how well you maintain your roof, there’s just no beating the combination of Mother Nature and time. With that being said, it’s important to know the difference between normal signs of aging and urgent problem areas on your roof that require professional roof and gutter protection services.

Here’s a guide from Lask Roofing & Siding on how to read your roof:

Natural Aging

The roof aging process begins as soon as your new shingles are exposed to the elements. The sun’s UV radiation and heat speed up roof aging. So do pollution, hail, snow, ice, falling tree limbs and people walking on the roof. With proper maintenance, you can minimize these ill effects.

Curling, Minor Cracks, Algae and Granule Loss

Curling is common in some shingles and is not a defect. It is the result of the natural aging and shrinkage of asphalt. It’s normal for minor cracks to appear on shingles due to exposure to the sun’s intense heat. This is usually not serious, as long as the cracks do not penetrate through the shingle and the roof is still shedding water.

Dark brown or black streaks on the roof result from algae growth on the shingles. They are unsightly, but should not affect the shingles’ ability to shed water. A roof that has been recently repaired or replaced will lose some shingle granules. This type of granule shedding is common and not a cause for concern.

Lask Roofing & Siding, provider of premium gutter guards, can confirm if the issues you’ve noted are signs of normal aging or a more serious matter.

Unnatural Aging

Some more serious signs of roof wear and aging could mean bigger problems and are not normal. These are the issues that tend to crop up when homeowners neglect roof maintenance.

Blisters, Buckling, Deep Cracks and Excessive Granule Loss

Blisters often result from under-ventilated attics or excessive use of plastic cement. Open blisters expose the asphalt and the roof to water penetration. Buckling results from poor roof ventilation or installation errors. Deep cracks weaken the roof’s ability to shed water and make it susceptible to leaks. Excessive granule loss exposes the shingles’ asphalt layer.
